About the Mottled Ancona
Mottled is the Ancona's sole recognised colour: a lustrous beetle-green-black ground with roughly one feather in five tipped by a small V-shaped white fleck, giving the breed its speckled finish. The mottling enlarges and multiplies with each moult — historically called "going grey" — so younger, darker birds with crisp, even tipping are preferred for exhibition. Beneath the plumage this remains a lively, hardy Mediterranean layer of white eggs, suited to free-range foraging rather than confinement.
