About the Blue Andalusian
The blue is the only standard-recognised Andalusian and the variety that defines the breed: each feather is a clear bluish-slate ground, distinctly laced with a darker blue or black, the lacing running down into the fluff. This colour is the heterozygous expression of a single dilution gene acting on a black base, which is why blue does not breed true — blue x blue gives roughly 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash. A hardy, active Mediterranean layer of white eggs, now a rare breed worth conserving.
