About the Bluebell
The Bluebell's signature blue comes from a single blue-dilution gene carried by its Blue Marans parent, softening the Rhode Island Red base into smoky blue-grey plumage that runs from a dark, near-black head through paler body feathering, frequently dusted with rust or brown across the neck and breast. Because Bluebell is a first-cross hybrid rather than a standardised breed, this colouring varies bird to bird and is not recognised by any breed standard. The result is one of the larger, docile hybrids, a reliable layer of around 240–260 large brown eggs a year.
