The Bovans Brown carries the warm russet-brown plumage typical of a red sex-link hybrid, often with flecks of white in the tail and neck; the colour itself is a sexing tool, as female chicks hatch with brown down while males are pale, letting hens be identified at day-old. Beneath the feathers she is the Dutch breeding house's flagship layer: robust, well-feathered and adaptable across free-range and back-garden systems, producing top-quality dark brown eggs with great laying persistency.
