About the Mahogany Red Buckeye
The Buckeye's sole recognised colour is a deep mahogany red — meant to echo the rich brown-red of the Ohio buckeye nut — offset by black in the tail, with males sometimes carrying extra dark feathering. A defining mark is the bar of slate-blue undercolour on the back feathers close to the body, which sets the Buckeye apart from the similar Rhode Island Red. Admitted to the APA Standard in 1904, it is the only American breed developed by a woman; its lack of colour variants kept it off the show bench but the hardy pea-combed, dual-purpose bird endures as a Livestock Conservancy heritage breed.
