About the Partridge Cochin
A patterned variety in which the sexes differ markedly: cocks carry rich red-gold hackle, back and saddle striped with black over a black breast and body, while hens show triple black pencilling drawn in concentric rings over a rich brown ground, repeated across the body. This intricate pencilling (called 'grouse' for the hen pattern in UK usage) makes partridge one of the original 1874 Cochin colours and a UK large-fowl standard. The detailed markings are prized on the breed's broad, soft feathering.
