About the Derbyshire Redcap
The Redcap exists in just one plumage variety: a rich ground of dark red and nut-brown, each body feather tipped with a crescent or half-moon of black that gives a uniform spangled effect, set off by a black, beetle-green tail. Cocks carry rather more colour variation than the more evenly marked hens. This is the breed's defining look, paired with its huge spiked rose comb, white eggs and hardy foraging vigour. Now vulnerable in the UK and critical in the US, it is a rare bird worth conserving.
