About the Mottled Houdan
The mottled is the Houdan's traditional and most common colour, a black ground broken with white spotting (the French call the pattern caillouté, "pebbled"). It is the only Houdan variety officially recognised in the UK and the original form accepted into the APA Standard in 1874. On this striking bird the breed's signature crest, beard, butterfly comb and five toes are shown to their best, though like all Houdans it is now an endangered breed kept mainly for exhibition.
