About the ISA Brown
The ISA Brown's single colour form is its defining feature: a warm reddish-brown to chestnut hen, typically flecked with white through the tail and a lighter buff underfluff. The colour is a sex-linked trait engineered from Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White lines, so chicks can be sexed at hatch by down colour (tan pullets, white cockerels). It is a commercial hybrid rather than a standardised breed, so it carries no show recognition; the brown plumage simply marks the workhorse layer that produces around 300 brown eggs in her first year.
