About the Black Jersey Giant
The original and most common variety, recognised by the APA in 1922. Its solid black plumage carries a striking iridescent 'beetle-green' sheen that flashes in sunlight, set off by black shanks with yellow foot soles and a black beak. This is the classic 'gentle giant' form bred in 1880s New Jersey as a table bird, and a calm, hardy winter layer of very large brown eggs.
