The Black Marans is a self-black variety, solid black through the plumage and underfluff with no other colour admitted, ideally carrying a green beetle sheen. One of the foundational standardised colours in both the UK (clean-legged) and French standards, it lays the same dark mahogany-to-chocolate eggs the breed is prized for.
