About the Black-Red Partridge Modern Game
The classic and original Modern Game colour: the cock carries a glossy orange-red hackle, back and saddle over a hard black breast and body, with willow-green legs and a dark beak. "Partridge" denotes the hen type, a richly pencilled brown-and-black female rather than the plain wheaten form. Together with the brown-reds, duckwings and piles, black-reds were among the first varieties standardised when the breed was built for the show bench after the 1849 cockfighting ban.
