About the Cuckoo Naked Neck
Cuckoo plumage shows irregular, blurred bands of dark and pale grey across each feather, produced by the barring gene. It is recognised in the full UK standard but not by the American Poultry Association, and some breed historians regard cuckoo as close to the breed's original colouring. The patterned coat sits over the trademark bare red neck of this hardy, heat-tolerant dual-purpose layer of light-brown eggs.
