About the Cuckoo North Holland Blue
Cuckoo is the breed's only recognised colour: irregular grey-and-dark barring across the plumage (not the crisp barring of true Barred birds), which can read as bluish at a distance and gives the breed its name despite no actual blue pigment. The barring is sex-linked, so females are noticeably darker than the lighter males, and crossing barred females with unbarred dark-down males yields sex-linkable chicks. A rare heavy dual-purpose Dutch fowl, it keeps the calm temperament and Malines-derived quick growth of the breed, with the British type carrying lightly feathered shanks.
