About the Birchen Orpington
A predominantly black Orpington relieved by a silvery-white hackle and saddle and fine white lacing on the upper breast, with a black wing triangle — the classic birchen pattern produced by the E^R allele at the E-locus. Cocks carry more silver in cape and saddle; hens are largely solid black with a patterned hackle and breast lacing. A rare, largely unstandardised colour on the soft-feathered, dual-purpose Orpington frame.
