About the Black Orpington
Black is the original Orpington, bred by William Cook and introduced in 1886 from Minorca, Langshan and Plymouth Rock stock. The standard calls for solid black plumage with a lustrous green sheen over the deep, soft feathering. A PCGB-recognised colour and the founding variety, it carries all the breed's calm, cold-hardy dual-purpose traits and lays light-brown eggs.
