About the Chocolate Orpington
The Chocolate is a uniform, warm milk-to-dark brown over the whole bird, the result of a rare sex-linked recessive chocolate gene that dilutes black pigment to brown. The mutation was identified in Orpington bantams by Dr Clive Carefoot in the 1990s and was previously unknown in chickens; because it is sex-linked, hens need one copy and cocks two to show the colour. A modern, prized variety carrying the usual gentle Orpington type.
