About the Mottled Orpington
A black Orpington flecked with white V-shaped tips on the feathers — the mottled pattern, caused by the recessive mottling gene, which scatters more white spangles across the plumage as the bird ages. Two copies of the gene are needed for the marking to show. It is a rare, unstandardised colour that keeps the breed's heavy, soft-feathered body and calm temperament.
