About the Barred Plymouth Rock
The original and best-known Plymouth Rock, the Barred carries crisp parallel bars of dark and light grey across every feather, produced by the sex-linked barring gene. Because males carry two copies of the gene to the female's one, cocks appear noticeably lighter, and chicks can be sexed at hatch by the size of the white head spot. It is the variety from which all others descend and the first accepted into the APA Standard in 1874, combining that bold patterning with the breed's sturdy, dual-purpose dependability.
