About the Rhode Island Red
The classic and only standard colour: a lustrous, even dark red over the whole body, deepening to near-black in the main tail and with black in the wing flights, the red carrying a green sheen in sunlight. Heritage and exhibition strains hold the richest, darkest mahogany tone, whereas modern production strains tend to be smaller and noticeably paler. This is the plumage that built the breed's reputation as one of the world's most reliable brown-egg layers and a true dual-purpose table fowl.
