About the Blue Sapphire Gem

The Blue Sapphire Gem owes its signature soft blue-grey plumage to the single Blue dilution gene, which lightens black pigment to a slate or lavender-grey reminiscent of the Andalusian; body and wing feathers are greyish-blue, often with darker hackles and faint lacing. Because the cross uses a Barred Plymouth Rock dam, the colour is sex-linked at hatch (cockerels show a pale head spot and barring; pullets are darker and plain-headed). As a retail-name hybrid it won't breed true and is not recognised by the APA, but the hen pairs her distinctive colour with a docile temperament and heavy laying of large brown eggs.
