About the Black Sumatra
The original and defining variety: lustrous black plumage carrying a rich beetle-green sheen that flashes oil-spill green and purple in sunlight, set off by a gypsy (purple-to-black) face. It was the first Sumatra admitted to the APA Standard in 1883 and remains the most widely kept colour, displaying the breed's long, sweeping low tail and characteristic multiple leg spurs. The Livestock Conservancy lists the Black Sumatra as Critical, making it the rarest end of an already scarce ornamental breed.
