About the Black Swedish Black
Solid black throughout: the plumage carries a glossy beetle-green iridescence (ideally no bluish cast), while skin, comb, wattles, beak, shanks and even bones and flesh run black from the fibromelanism mutation that overexpresses the EDN3 gene. Unlike the show-bred Ayam Cemani, the Svarthöna is a hardy Swedish landrace shaped by natural selection; it is small, active and able to fly. Genuinely rare and unrecognised by the major poultry associations, it lays small cream eggs.
