About the Grey-Brown With Red Breast Spot Bleeding Heart Dove

The wild-type Luzon Bleeding-heart wears slate grey-brown upperparts that flash iridescent purple, royal blue or bottle-green in changing light, with blackish wing bands, pale grey wingbars and a buff-to-chestnut belly. The white breast carries the signature vivid red 'wound', ringed by a faint pink 'bloodstain' blush; males show a larger, brighter patch than the duller females. A shy forest-floor ground dove kept only by dedicated aviculturists, it is near-threatened in the wild.
