About the Tambourine Dove
The wild-type Tambourine Dove shows its natural African forest plumage: a clean white face and underparts contrasting with a grey crown and pale grey-brown back, wings and tail. Folded wings carry distinctive large dark-purple patches, and chestnut primaries flash in low, agile flight; the eye-ring, bill and feet are purple-red. Females are duller, white only on the belly with grey-brown face and breast. A shy, ground-feeding woodland dove named for its soft, persistently repeated drumming call, kept by aviculturists for its quiet beauty.
