About the Dusky Hook Bill
The dusky (dusky mallard) is the standard, baseline form of the Hook Bill: a black head and rump glossed with green lustre over a body in shades of grey, with no white neck-ring and a slate-grey bill. It is one of three colours recognised in the UK, the Netherlands and France, admitted to the British Waterfowl Standards in 1997. Like all Hook Bills it carries the breed's distinctive downward-curving bill, is a keen forager and lays blue, green or white eggs. Now critically rare.
