About the Silver Appleyard
The silver plumage comes from a restricted mallard gene that limits pigment on the face and body of both sexes. The drake carries a green head stamped with silver eyebrows and throat, claret breast feathers tipped white, and chestnut-edged scapulars; the duck is creamy-white flecked and streaked with fawn and grey-brown. This is the defining colour of Reginald Appleyard's heavy Suffolk dual-purpose duck — a fine white-skinned table bird and a good layer of white eggs, now on the RBST watchlist.
