About the Black Emu
The Black Emu is the darkest expression of the breed's natural plumage range rather than a distinct mutation: birds in damp, wetter conditions develop a deeper, sootier grey-brown than the rufous-tinted emus of arid red-soil country. Juveniles also begin blackish, barred with brown, before settling to the adult tone. It is the same hardy farmed ratite, with the male incubating the clutch of deep-green eggs.
