About the Standard Brown-Grey Emu
The wild-type Emu: shaggy, grey-brown plumage in which the feather shafts and tips are black, giving a soft, double-quilled, hair-like coat. Colour shifts naturally with environment for camouflage — rufous-tinted on arid red soils, darker in damp regions — and dark feather tips absorb sunlight while the inner plumage insulates against heat. This is the common, hardy farmed form raised for meat, oil and leather, with the male incubating the deep-green eggs.
