About the African Black Ostrich
The African Black is the domesticated farming strain, developed in South Africa in the early 1900s by crossing North and East African stock for the feather trade. Smaller and notably more docile than the wild-type necks, it is prized for superior fertility, leather and meat plus dense, high-quality plumage — jet-black in the cock, grey-brown in the hen. It remains the standard bird kept for commercial production and the easiest of these giants for newcomers to handle.
