About the Old English Blackneck Common Pheasant
The Old English Blackneck (the nominate P. c. colchicus, the original Caucasian bird) lacks the white collar entirely, the neck running unbroken green-purple into the body. It shows buff-to-brown wing coverts and rusty-chestnut upper-tail coverts rather than the pale grey of the ringneck. Long established in Britain, blacknecks are large, meaty and reputed as steady, home-loving birds; pure stock reverts toward ringneck after a few generations of crossing.
