About the Texan Pioneer
The Texan Pioneer's defining feature is its auto-sexing plumage: the sex-linked Faded gene, carried on a sex chromosome, makes the two sexes distinguishable by colour the moment they hatch. Because cocks carry two active sex chromosomes they fade more, emerging mostly white with ash-red flecking on the head and neck, while hens hold more pigment as a muted ash-red or mealy. This lets squab breeders sex chicks straight from the nest and pair stock without handling, complementing the breed's plump breast and small head, legs and wings for efficient meat output.
