About the Red Breasted Button Quail

A recessive mutation discovered and established in the US in 1987 (linked to a p.Pro292Leu change in the MC1R gene) that exaggerates the sexes: cocks become deep blue-slate across the body with an intense russet-red breast and reduced facial markings, while hens turn pale cream with fine black V-shaped speckling. It heightens the breed's natural sexual dimorphism but keeps its small size and gentle aviary manner.
