About the Wild Type Button Quail
The original, unmutated colouring and the only variety guaranteed to breed true. Cocks carry the classic King Quail livery: a brown-and-black patterned back with pale shafting, a bold black-and-white facial bib and a rich slate-blue front giving way to a rusty-chestnut breast; hens are mottled brown with cream faces. As the natural form of this thumb-sized, ground-dwelling aviary bird, it is the baseline against which every colour mutation is judged.
