The defining feature is the male's swirling black-and-white "clown-faced" mask, the intricate facial pattern that earns this species its harlequin name. It pairs with a rounded crest on the nape and dark blue-grey flanks heavily dotted with bold white spots; hens are cryptic browns with only a ghost of the male's markings.
