Beautiful German Pansy and Pansy Fee Coturnix hatching eggs from our own dedicated breeding flock in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Our birds are housed in a separate breeding group consisting exclusively of Pansy and Pansy Fee Coturnix, with no other colour varieties introduced.

Genetics & Breeding

Our breeding flock originates from a specialised Pansy genetic line incorporating the recessive Pansy pattern mutation and Fee dilution genetics.

Pansy Genetics

Pansy is an autosomal recessive colour mutation responsible for distinctive feather patterning. Birds carrying two copies express the Pansy phenotype.

Fee Dilution Genetics - Fee is a colour-modifying mutation that influences feather pigmentation and the expression of warmer tones.

Depending on the inherited Fee combination, offspring may display:

Traditional Pansy colouration without Fee dilution. Pansy with single-copy Fee dilution. Pansy with double-copy Fee dilution, often displaying cooler grey, silver, black and white tones.

About the Pansy Japanese Quail

Pansy is a recessive pattern mutation on the Extended Brown locus, so a bird needs two copies to look Pansy. Extended Brown and Sparkly sit on the same locus, which means a bird carries at most two of these three: two copies of one, or one copy each of two. Pansy Fee adds the Fee dilution, giving a mix of black, white and grey. One copy of Fee keeps some cream tones; two copies remove the brown and red from the plumage altogether.
