About the Buff Turkey
The single recognised colour of the breed: rich reddish-buff body feathers with white tail feathers crossed by a light buff bar near the tip, and white wing feathers shaded buff. Matching colour across the sexes is a real breeding challenge, as hens tend to lighten after moulting. The buff's near-white pinfeathers once dressed out cleanly at market; the original Buff was accepted by the APA in 1874 but dropped by 1915, and today's Jersey Buff (revived in 1940s New Jersey) sits under 'All Other Varieties' and is listed 'Watch' by The Livestock Conservancy.
