About the Black Slate Turkey
An off-standard expression of the Slate where the dilution gene fails to lighten a black-based bird, leaving solid or near-solid black plumage rather than the required slaty-blue. Standards treat entirely black feathers as a defect, so black birds are non-exhibition, but they reflect the genetics behind the variety: slate arises from the D dilution gene acting on a Black (BB) or Bronze (bb) background, and undiluted blacks regularly appear in Slate breeding lines. Same naturally-breeding, good-foraging American heritage turkey beneath the colour.
